Wedding Etiquette: Q & A

The Best Advice On Handling Your Trickiest Dilemmas.

My cousin’s wedding is taking over my life! As a bridesmaid I have been invited to two engagement parties, three showers, a spa weekend and a bachelorette party. I love her, but is it OK to say “no” to a few events?
You can certainly forgo some of these many parties. Be honest and up-front but non-confrontational with your cousin. Consider saying something like, “Jane, I’m so thrilled to be part of your wedding. I need to let you know, though, that there are a few celebrations I won’t be able to make. I hope you understand.” Then give her the chance to respond. Reassure her that you will be there for her throughout the wedding weekend and for some parties. Do attend one or two pre-wedding celebrations (the bridal shower or bachelorette party perhaps); they’re opportunities to spend time with the rest of the wedding party in a more relaxed setting. Also, there’s no need to bring a gift to every event.

My groom’s college roommate passed away last year, and we would like to remember him in our wedding ceremony. My mother thinks this will put the emphasis on mourning rather than on celebration. Is there an appropriate way to commemorate him?
Your mother’s concern is understandable, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a fitting  way to memorialize your fiancé’s friend. The important thing is not to upset people during such a joyful occasion—especially his parents if they attend. Something prominent, such as a large photograph displayed at the reception would likely be too painful a reminder. But you might make a short toast at the rehearsal dinner, particularly if the friend would have been one of the attendants and thus there with you. You could include in the program a brief remembrance of the role this man played in your soon-to-be husband’s life. Or you could light a candle before the ceremony and explain that this symbolic gesture is meant to honor him.

Our families have very different traditions. How can we make everyone feel like they are being represented?
Many couples mix it up, personalizing their ceremony and reception with elements that represent distinct traditions. If these are religious in nature, talk to your officiant to ensure that the ceremony site allows interfaith marriages to be performed. You can use your program to explain any rituals that your guests might be unfamiliar with. For example, one couple built their wedding around their families' British and Swedish customs. Their interfaith ceremony incorporated rites from both the Episcopalian and Lutheran, while the reception had food and music from both cultures.

Celebrity News: Ideas to Steal from George & Amal's Wedding

via Instagram
We knew the moment Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney descended on Venice, it would be a five-star weekend. Romance and elegance permeated throughout the floating city late last month; it was definitely a glamorous affair worthy of an Oscar with a list of Hollywood’s elite in attendance.

Of course, you may not want to spend an estimated $13 million on a wedding celebration, but you can take a few elegant trends from Hollywood’s new royal couple to make your own fairytale wedding. Here’s what we spotted on the canals of Venice.

WEDDING WEEKEND Because the actor/director and his human rights attorney met in Italy last September, it seemed fitting to wed in Venice—the city of amore! For their wedding weekend, the couple invited their guests to relax and set up camp at Belmond Hotel Cipriani. The couple began the festivities on Friday with a boat ride down the Grand Canal to join friends and family for the rehearsal dinner before going their ways for their bachelor and bachelorette parties. On Saturday, they exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony at the Aman Canal Grande Hotel followed by a reception into the wee hours. The celebrations continued with a post- wedding lunch the next day at The Cip, a dinner at Le Graneries at Belmond Hotel Cipriani, and then a civil ceremony on Monday morning.
MAKE IT YOURS From a welcome party to the farewell lunch, a wedding weekend gives you ample opportunity to entertain all of your loved ones with fun, memory-making, personalized events.

VENICE Italy has always been a choice spot for celebrity weddings. Who can forget Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, or John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, and most recently Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka? They have all said “I do” under the Tuscan sun. But for Mr. & Mrs. Clooney, the city of Venice—a group of small islands separated by long and winding canals—set the mood for their wedding celebration.
MAKE IT YOURS If Venice seems out of bounds, then opt for somewhere closer to home. The Caribbean offers spectacular accommodations at many all-inclusive resorts. And don’t forget Hawaii’s exotic appeal where you can entertain friends and family in our 50th state.

THE MONOGRAM George and Amal have brought the monogram back in style. The couple personalized their wedding by designing a logo just for the event. Intertwined initials—an elegant “A” and the classic Art Deco “G”—graced many aspects of their wedding from the bride’s hatbox to flags that signified their fleet of speedboats.
MAKE IT YOURS Add elegance to the wedding by having your initials set the mood. Use it on wedding stationery and invitations, napkin holders, and certainly shining brightly as a cake topper.

SEEING RED While Alamuddin went with luxe traditional white for her wedding dress by designer Oscar de la Renta, romantic red played a big part of the weekend soiree. Alamuddin wowed everyone at the rehearsal dinner in a stunning red gown by Alexander McQueen. Red also appeared at the post-nuptial dinner at Belmond Hotel Cipriani in the flowers and silk pillows adorning the chairs. And no doubt about it, plenty of Italian red wine was enjoyed by all.
MAKE IT YOURS Whether it’s red or in combination with another color, make your signature color standout in décor, food and, yes, even your wedding dress.

SPECIAL MOMENTS There’s no doubt to those in attendance that George and Amal are madly in love—and don’t take themselves too seriously. And like many newlyweds, they gifted their guests with a look into their playful romance by sharing a special photo of their romance including one of Clooney taking a bite out of Alamuddin’s hat.
MAKE IT YOURS Share your special times with loved ones with a photo that speaks your love for one another. It will be treasured by friends and family for many years to come.

CHECK THE PHONES Smartphones and all social media were banned to maintain the privacy of the ceremony and reception. However, cameras with trackable photos were provided for all guests.
MAKE IT YOURS Kindly ask guests to turn off all smartphones for the ceremony at the very least.

Celebrity News: Jessica Simpson's Bachelorette Party!

Jessica Simpson's Co-ed Bachelorette Bash!

By: Amy Darwish

GREG TIDWELL/ PACIFIC COAST NEWS
Good girl Jessica Simpson opted for a fun night with her closest family and friends for her bachelorette party. She and fiancé Eric Johnson share their group of friends and agreed they would have more fun all together than apart. (Awww!) The combined bachelor - bachelorette party included "fun toasts and dinner and dancing," according to one friend in attendance.

The co-ed party did not, however, include any of the tacky x-rated items notoriously associated with bachelorette parties. "It wasn't about being naughty," one friend shared. "They just wanted a great night out with friends and family."

The party may not have been a wild time, but it was still a fun filled night for all. The couple and their guests had a wonderful time celebrating together. Jessica was seen being escorted to and from the rooftop of the Eveleigh restaurant in L.A, where their dinner was held. She wore her hair down and wavy, with simple makeup for the night. She showed off her legs in a little black dress featuring a deep-v illusion neckline. After dinner and drinks, the party moved on to Warwick nightclub, where they all danced the night away.
Jessica & Eric set their wedding for the July fourth holiday weekend.

We love the idea of a co-ed bash. Would you want a traditional bachelorette party or a co-ed party like Jessica Simpson's? Let us know in the comments!

Celebrity News: Kim and Kanye Tied the Knot!

Kimye Wedding: It's A Celebration in Florence

By: Stacy Shiffner

Fans of the whirlwind romance of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West can rejoice in knowing that the couple have said 'I Do' and are now officially husband and wife! Although the romantic backdrop of Paris was the setting for their pre-wedding festivities including Kim's bachelorette party, the couple said their vows this morning at Fort di Belvedere a stunning 16th century fortress in Florence, Italy.

Guests of the wedding included the bride and grooms' families, celebrity friends such as Jonathan Cheban, LaLa Anthony, John Legend, Kim's long-time friend Rachel Roy, and of course the couple's precious daughter, North.

Instagram
After guests were seen arriving, they were seated and awaited for Kim to walk down the aisle at sunset. To the live vocals of Andrea Bocelli, Kim was escorted down the aisle by her step-father, Bruce Jenner and lead to the flower-adorned alter to meet her groom. By her side were her bridesmaids including sisters, Khloe, Kourtney, Kendall and Kylie, rumored to be wearing Vera Wang gowns. Here, the bride and groom exchanged words and were pronounced husband and wife in front of their crowd of nearly 200 guests who clapped as the couple then made their way to their wedding reception, a fete adorned with marble tables and an off-white and gold color scheme.

We wish the very best to Kim and Kanye of their new marriage and look forward to sharing more about their wedding as details (and photos!) arise.

UPDATE: Here's the first look at Kim's Givenchy couture wedding gown! We love the cathedral veil and lovely long sleeves with illusion details throughout. Riccardo Tisci is a very close friend of the couple, and both Kanye and baby North also reportedly wore custom Givenchy creations on the big day.
We think Kim looked absolutely stunning! What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
