Find Your Honeymoon Hotspot in the Caribbean

Looking for your place in the sun? Find it in our guide to some of the top spots for honeymooners.
By Patricia Canole

TURKS & CAICOS

Parrot Cay
ITINERARY Just over an hour’s flight from Miami is a cluster of islands known as Turks & Caicos. Eight major islands and dozens of tiny ones give you that priceless honeymoon commodity: quiet. The long stretch of Grace Bay on the main island, Providenciales (Provo), is abuzz with activity and lots to do. BEST FOR Exploring! It doesn’t get much more romantic than chartering a private yacht to a virtually deserted island for the day. Make a stop at Little Water Cay. Here, there’ll be just a few like-minded day-trippers sharing the sand—oh, yes, and quite a few of the creatures that give the islet its local name: Iguana Island. WHERE TO STAY This posh private-island Parrot Cay (parrotcay.com) resort sits on a thousand-acre paradise northeast of Provo. Beach villas feature plunge pools, airy wooden decks and elegant whitewashed rooms. Enjoy lobster dinners (and other seafood specialties) on the deck of the Terrace restaurant, or grab a sundowner from the bar and stroll down to the talcum-powder-soft beach that stretches more than a mile. HONEYMOON HIGHLIGHT Kayaking to the conch-shell-strewn islands, snaking in and out of mangrove-lined coves along the way (keep your eyes peeled for little nurse sharks and other eye-catching marine life).

JAMAICA

ITINERARY There’s just no better place for a laid-back honeymoon, where you’ll listen to hip-swaying music at every turn, than Jamaica—the birthplace of reggae. Of course, you’ll spend countless hours sunning on a dreamy beach. Good choice. But don’t forget to enjoy the country’s many cultural gifts as well. Jamaican artistry runs wild. Look for creations ranging from large canvases in ritzy Montego Bay galleries to silkscreened T-shirts from funky art studios. BEST FOR Those who love music! Take a Chukka Caribbean Adventure (chukkacaribbean.com) bus tour of St. Ann, where you will see—and hear—everything that is Bob Marley. WHERE TO STAY At Round Hill Hotel and Villas (roundhill.com) you’ll feel more like royalty than a guest. The resort occupies a breathtaking location on a Caribbean-lapped promontory just eight miles west of Montego Bay. Flowers bloom everywhere on the estate, a rainbow palette of hibiscus, bougainvillea and jasmine. Honeymoon in the Pineapple House which overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Rooms feature mahogany furnishings and terra-cotta floors. HONEYMOON HIGHLIGHT Spend an afternoon at the Martha Brae River, where according to legend, an Arawak Indian killed herself before ever revealing the whereabouts of a gold mine to the Spanish. The river now bears her name and is believed that her ghost stands guard at the mine’s entrance. Rafting down the river is a popular—and relaxing—pastime.

RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO

Banyan Tree
ITINERARY Situated just south of Cancun on one of the Yucatan Coast’s longest stretches of white sand, the wildly romantic setting makes it feel like you’ve arrived at the end of the world. All this plus ancient Mayan ruins to explore make for a perfect honeymoon. BEST FOR Couples who appreciate high-end resorts and the high-stakes adventures of exploring local villages for exotic cultural experiences. WHERE TO STAY Step into a world of Asia-meets-Mexico splendor at the newly opened Banyan Tree Mayakoba (banyantree.com). From your first glimpse of the banyan tree in the water courtyard to the intimate design of each villa and you’ll be convinced this is heaven. Each villa features overwater or beachside accommodations tucked amidst lagoons, canals and lush mangroves for complete privacy. For sheer dining pleasure, enjoy an in-villa gourmet dining experience. HONEYMOON HIGHLIGHT There’s plenty to do in and around Riviera Maya. Browse the luxury shops of Playa del Carmen or explore the vast Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve with its pristine rainforest and mangrove swamps (one of the last stands of the jaguar in Mexico). Nearby are many of the Mayan world’s best ruins like Tulum—where you can explore together.

Real Weddings: Summertime Love

Happy First Day of Summer! For all you 2013 summertime brides-to-be you are likely finalizing all your plans and getting ready for the BIG DAY, but for those who are newly engaged and starting to gather color schemes, cute ideas and photography inspiration for your summer celebrations we have a Real Wedding just for you.

Chrisie & Austin
Corolla, North Carolina
Photography by Brooke Mayo

HOW THEY MET  Our story goes all the way back to 1994, when Austin moved to Chesapeake, Virginia, where I lived with my family. At that time, I wasn’t exactly head over heels—yet. Undaunted, Austin didn't want me to go off to college without knowing about his crush on me. So when I passed Austin my yearbook to sign, he saw his chance and wrote, “I know this may sound corny, but I think you are my dream girl.” Fast forward ten years to Northern Virginia where Austin had lived since college and I just moved from North Carolina. It took a while to get the timing right, but one night, a little over three years ago, we were both invited to the same party and the sparks finally flew.

THE PROPOSAL
Austin proposed to me in a spot that held a special place in my heart—at the base of Dark Hallow Falls in the Shenandoah Mountains. It was where my dad proposed to my mother. We stayed at the beautiful Goodstone Inn, where the staff worked with Austin behind the scenes to have our cottage decked out with Champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, rose petals, and a roaring fire.

NUMBER OF GUESTS 160.

BRIDAL GOWN I wore a stunning ivory lace gown from Jim Hjelm. The sleeveless V-neck dress was enhanced with ivory ribbon and floral detail.

LOCATION OF WEDDING The Whalehead Club, Corolla, North Carolina.

WEDDING COLORS Coral and turquoise.

WEDDING CAKE It’s hard to believe, but our beautiful cake tasted even better than it looked. The alternating layers of key lime and éclair suited everyone’s tastes.

FAVORITE MOMENTS There were too many: Austin’s first glimpse of his “dream girl,” the reception lawn games and, of course, dancing the night away as husband and wife to the awesome band.

FIRST DANCE “Then” by Brad Paisley.

THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THE WEDDING Vintage…Love-filled…Fun.

FAVORS A donation was made to the American Cancer Society.

HONEYMOON SPOT St. Lucia.

Gift Ideas for Dad
Custom Album- For a truly personal gift compile pictures of you and your dad through the years and create a custom album. Try easy to use sites such as shutterfly.com or blurb.com. Have your pages start from birth and finish with either your favorite picture together or an image of you both at a wedding related event.

Food and Drinks- Treat your dad to a fine wine or a delicious meal as a gift from you. Make it a date for just the two of you to enjoy when you return from your honeymoon. Chances are your dad will be missing you soon after your wedding and it will be a good time to reconnect after the hectic days before and after the wedding. Pick a place that is quite and not busy so you can have nice conversation and won't be rushed to leave before you want to.

A Keepsake- A watch or cufflinks will let your dad literally wear his love for you on his sleeve. Have it engraved with a quote or both your initials and the date to truly make it extra special. Refreshing Recipes to Stay Cool this Summer

REFRESHING, HEALTHY & UNIQUE RECIPES TO STAY COOL & FIT THIS SUMMER

 Asian Avocado Salsa:

This twist on salsa is great if you love something with a little spice and crunch. The dip is ideal to serve at a dinner party with your parents and in-laws to be – and if you want to be extra healthy serve it with Mary’s Gone Crackers (a rice and sesame gluten free cracker) instead of tortilla chips.

Pineapple-Coconut Smoothie:

After a long, hot day of shopping or running errands with your maid of honor, this revitalizing drink is perfect to quench your thirst. Remember to freeze about 2 cups of coconut water in 1 or 2 ice-cube trays before leaving the house. Blend 2 cups of chopped pineapple and 2 cups of the coconut ice with 1 ½ tablespoons of lime juice, 1 tablespoon of honey and ½ cup of coconut water.

No-Bake Energy Bites:

Perfect as an on-the-go snack these no-bake bites are both nutritious and delicious. Maybe you have a long day of wedding planning ahead of you? Take these treats and eat one when you feel you are running low on energy.

All that’s needed for this recipe are 1/3 less fat cream cheese, cucumber (washed and unpeeled), fresh chives or green onions, and wheat bread.
